Verdict looms for former AFC Councillor, father, neighbour
Next Wednesday, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow will sum up the evidence in the trial of Surendra Sukhdeo, his daughter Mandy Sukhdeo and their neighbour Rean Ghani, then put the case to the 12 jurors for them to deliberate on a verdict.
The trio is accused of the Valentine’s Day 2017 murder of 22-year-old fisherman Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, formerly of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
Following their arraignment last month at the Demerara High Court, the three murder accused pleaded not guilty to the joint charge.
They are being represented by a legal team led by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes, while the State is being represented by State Counsel Latifah Elliot, Marisa Edwards, and Simran Gajraj.
At the time of this alleged killing, Mandy Sukhdeo had been an Alliance for Change (AFC) Councillor who had reportedly claimed that she had been confronted by Nazamudeen, who had snatched her bag and attempted to escape.
She had raised an alarm, and residents in the neighbourhood had pursued Nazamudeen.
Reports are that he was caught in the ruins of a house. According to reports, he was tied up and beaten by the woman, her father, and their neighbour.
Following the beating, the man had suffered severe injuries to his body, and had been taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed.
Three pieces of wood, suspected to be the murder weapons, were recovered from the scene by detectives. The woman and her father were immediately arrested, while Ghani was apprehended the following day, after he was allegedly implicated by neighbours. (G1)
