Western Tigers crowned a remarkable Super 16 campaign on New Year’s Day, shocking the football fraternity with a thrilling 1–0 victory over tournament favourites Slingerz Football Club (FC) in the final at the National Training Centre in Providence.
In a contest marked by intensity, tactical discipline and few clear chances, it was veteran Trinidad and Tobago striker Kevon Woodley who proved the difference.
The Soca Warriors’ forward, affectionately known for his big-game presence, struck in the penultimate minute of regulation time (89th) to seal the title for the Tigers and bring Slingerz FC’s unbeaten streak in the tournament to a dramatic end.

Slingerz FC entered the final with momentum and confidence, having swept aside all opposition en route to the championship match. They controlled possession for long periods and created several promising opportunities, but Western Tigers remained resolute at the back, frustrating the favourites and waiting patiently for their moment.
That moment arrived late, when Woodley pounced to deliver the decisive goal and ignite celebrations on the Tigers’ bench and in the stands.

Woodley’s heroics capped an outstanding individual tournament, as he was named Most Valuable Player and Top Goal Scorer of the Super 16. His leadership and timely goals were instrumental in Western Tigers’ historic triumph.
For their championship success, Western Tigers walked away with the top prize of $2 million, while runners-up Slingerz FC earned $1 million for their efforts.
Earlier in the day, the third-place play-off saw the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) end their tournament on a high with a convincing 3–0 victory over the Guyana Police Force.

After a goalless first half, GDF turned on the style in the second period, led by Abumchi Opara, who netted a clinical brace in the 67th and 83rd minutes. Jeffery Pereira added the third goal in the 79th minute to complete a dominant performance.
The win secured $750,000 for the GDF, while the Guyana Police Force collected $500,000 for finishing fourth.
With dramatic finishes, standout individual performances and a surprise champion, the Super 16 tournament concluded in memorable fashion, providing a fitting start to the football calendar for the new year.
