2 Police Officers under close arrest for stabbing, beating GDF ranks
Two Police Constables are currently under close arrest and are being questioned in relation to an attack on two ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) which occurred on Saturday in Linden.
Regional Commander for Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Hugh Winter confirmed that GDF Corporal Selwyn Cumberbatch was stabbed several times about his body and remained in serious condition.
“He [Cumberbatch] is still hospitalised and the Police Officers are there for questioning. Though they are there for questioning, they weren’t identified, since the rank is still hospitalised. He will have to identify whether or not they [the Police Officers] were involved,” Winter added.
Based on reports received, one of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) ranks is attached to the Mackenzie Police Station, and the other is stationed at the Central Police Station in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
It was reported that about 22:00h on Saturday, Cumberbatch, 30, of Wisroc, Linden, and Terrence Collis, 27, of Wismar, Linden, also a GDF rank, were attacked, beaten, and stabbed by the two Police ranks.
Cumberbatch and Collis were reportedly at a barbecue at Block 22, Wismar along with friends when a fight broke out.
It is still unclear how the fight started, but Police stated that Cumberbatch was stabbed several times about his body with a broken bottle. Collis was hit in the head with a glass bottle.
Following the incident, both men were taken to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), where they were treated for their injuries. Cumberbatch was then admitted while Collis was sent away.
