The University of Guyana has received 27 applications for the position of Vice Chancellor and principal, following an international recruitment exercise conducted by a council-appointed search committee.
The announcement was made by Chancellor Sir Ronald Sanders, who confirmed that the application period closed on April 18. The Search Committee will now move to the next phase of the process, which involves reviewing submissions and shortlisting candidates.
The current Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Paloma Mohamed-Martin’s, tenure is scheduled to end in July 2026, marking seven years in office.
According to the University Council, the same procedures used in the previous selection process will be applied in the current round to ensure consistency, fairness, and adherence to established governance standards.
Sir Ronald noted that the appointment comes at a time of significant national change. He pointed to Guyana’s ongoing economic expansion, including developments in the energy sector, infrastructure upgrades, economic diversification, and increased international engagement.
“In these circumstances, the University of Guyana must play a leading role in developing advanced human capital, strengthening research capacity, fostering innovation, and contributing independent expertise to national and regional development,” the Chancellor stated in a release to the media on Wednesday.
He added that the Council is seeking a transformational academic leader capable of positioning the university as a centre for research, professional training, and regional influence within a rapidly changing environment.
According to the release, the Chancellor further stated that the council remains committed to transparency throughout the process. He indicated that the public will be kept informed of key developments, including the announcement of shortlisted candidates and the scheduling of public lectures, which will form part of the evaluation process.
