Guyanese contingent touchdown for Birmingham Commonwealth games
Three days away from day one of the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, Guyana’s athletes begin arriving in the city today for the highly-anticipated sports event.
The 32-member contingent is touching down in phases with the swimming team, along with their coach, reaching the athletes village first, followed by part of the table tennis team and then the boxers.
Guyana will be represented in seven sport disciplines at the July 28-August 8 Games – badminton, boxing, cycling, squash, swimming, table tennis, and track and field.
The entire swim team comprising Patrice Mahaica, Paul Mahaica, Aleka Persaud and Sekhel Tzedeq, along with the entire boxing team comprising Desmond Amsterdam, Colin Lewis and Keevin Allicock, have all arrived in Birmingham. The teams are accompanied by Coaches Sean Baksh and Terrence Poole and Sebert Blake respectively.
Meanwhile, the majority of the table tennis team, in Shemar Britton, Joel Alleyne, Christopher Franklin, Natalie Cummings, Priscilla Greaves, and Thuraia Thomas have arrived with Coach Idi Lewis and Linden Johnson. Team members Chelsea Edghill and Jonathan Van Lange are yet to arrive.
Also arriving are some members of the squash team, with Shomari Wiltshire and Jason-Ray and Ashley Khalil arriving today.
Boxing, squash and table tennis are among the first sports to spring into action on July 29.
