Twenty-year-old Shamar Charles, of Alberttown, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty to answer to three armed robbery charges.
The first charge stated that on July 10,2019 at Lombard Street, Georgetown, while being in company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Tessa Griffith of a phone valued $135,000, a gold band valued $100,000, and a gold chain valued $300,000.
It was further alleged that on May 26, 2019 at Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while being armed with a gun, he robbed Jermaine Inniss of a gold chain valued $440,000.
Additionally, it is alleged that on May 26, 2019 at Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Kristian Jeffrey of a chain valued $400,000, one wallet valued $10,000, and $15,000.
Charles denied all the charges.
Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman told the Court that Guyana’s top car racing champion Kristian Jeffrey, who lost part of his ear during the robbery, was attacked at Flour Mill Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
It was reported that the racer was in company of his friend after leaving the Buju Banton show in May at the National Stadium in Providence, EBD, when they were held at gunpoint by the defendant and relieved of their valuables.
Jeffrey, who won the Caribbean Group Four Championship twice, was shot during a confrontation. He was rushed to a private city hospital.
The prosecution is also contending that Griffith was standing outside her workplace on Lombard Street, Georgetown at 12:00h when Charles, who was riding a motorcycle, approached her and relived her of her valuables. Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegations and the penalty the charges attracts. The case will continue on July 31.
