Berbice sailor who allegedly fell overboard drowned – PME

A post-mortem performed on the body of Berbice sailor Damion McAlmont on Monday proved that the father of two died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.

The examination was performed by Government pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.
The body of the 38-year-old man has since been handed over to relatives for burial.
Reports indicate that McAlmont fell overboard at the Toolsie Persaud Quarry’s St Mary Wharf, Essequibo River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), in the wee hours of Saturday.
The man, who hails from Lot 420 Wapping Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was employed by Toolsie Persaud Quarry and worked as a sailor on a barge.
It was reported that on the day in question, the now dead man and others were working on a barge when he fell into the water and disappeared.
One of his colleagues told Police that he was pulling the bow rope when he saw McAlmont running and eventually falling into the river.
In an attempt to save him, the worker plunged overboard to rescue McAlmont but he had already disappeared under the water.
A search was subsequently launched but it was unsuccessful. The man’s body was found later on Saturday.
