Police in Regional Division Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) are investigating the death of a 21-year-old male, whose body was discovered on Monday at Golden Fleece Beach, Essequibo Coast. Dead is Darshan Persaud, a labourer of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). According to police, Persaud’s body was found at about 11:20h on Monday. Investigations revealed that Persaud had been staying with his grandmother, a 68-year-old pensioner of Golden Fleece Estate, for the past three days. According to reports, Saturday at about 20:00h, Persaud told his grandmother that he was going in search of a place to rent and asked her to wash his clothes, indicating that he would return. Further enquiries disclosed that at about 11:20h on Monday, a 58-year-old resident of Golden Fleece Koker Dam, went into a nearby bushy area to cut bora bramble when he discovered Persaud’s motionless body, clad in black and white track pants, lying on the ground beneath a tree. The man immediately reported the matter to the police at Suddie Police Station.
This newspaper was told that items found about 15 feet above where the body was located led investigators to believe that the death may have resulted from suicide.
A bag containing clothing and a cellular phone, believed to belong to Persaud, was found a short distance from the body also. The young man was identified by his grandmother and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was subsequently transferred to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
