The close-knit community of Canal No1 Polder, West Bank Demerara, was plunged into a state of shock after a well-known young man brutally chopped and stabbed a woman to death.

The dead woman has been identified only as 53-year-old Laila. Based on reports received, the woman, who lived in the two-storey house with her brother, was at home alone when the suspect reportedly attacked her while she was on her bed.
Guyana Times understands that at about 20:30h on Sunday residents heard loud screams emanating from the house and rushed to the woman’s aid.
Upon arriving at the scene, the woman was found lying in a pool of blood on the floor next to her bed. The bed, eyewitnesses related, was drenched in blood which suggested that she might have been stabbed on the bed and attempted to escape but collapsed.
It is also believed that the woman might have been raped by the suspect before she was brutally killed.
Additional information received revealed that after realising the suspect was hiding in the ceiling of the house, residents attempted to apprehend him, but in the process, one man was chopped to his hand.
The suspect, who goes by the name “Kevin” is said to be 22 years old and resides a few houses away from the conservancy. Up to press time, the police were still conducting their investigations.
