Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships 2017

9 teams to battle for supremacy

Nine teams including hosts Guyana have confirmed their participation in the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships set for April 13 to 18 2017 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Homestretch Avenue Georgetown, Guyana.

The eight regional teams that will battle for regional table tennis Supremacy alongside Guyana are Barbados, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and French Guiana who will all be battling for supremacy over the Easter weekend.

The competition will be used as the qualification event for the second Pan American Junior and cadet table tennis Championships scheduled for the USA in September of 2017. This competition will be used to select the top four teams from the Caribbean who will join the top four (4) from Central American and the top four (4) teams from South America to qualify for the Pan Am event.

The Cadet and Junior championship engages players aged 15 years and under and 18 years and under. The tournament will provide the opportunity for 32 thirty two of Guyana’s top junior athletes the opportunity to compete against the region’s best for regional honours. The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has already shortlisted the squad to be announced in view of starting the team’s preparation.

Last year the Guyana Junior by team secured silver medal in a three way tie.

This year the locals will look to use the home advantage to put in a more outstanding performance in view of securing qualification for the prestigious Junior Pan American Table tennis Championships and winning regional honours.

Additionally, the 32 local tennis athletes’ opportunity to represent Guyana and compete against the region’s best for regional honours will only see long term benefits for the sport.

The junior boys team features a very formidable line up with the likes of Miguel Wong, Elishaba Johnson and Kyle Edghill while the fast improving Nicholas Romain will lead Guyana’s challenge in the 18 years and under Boys division.

Tyriq Saunders, Terrence Rausche, Yeudistr Persaud, kaysan Brandon Jaikarran, Navindra Persaud, Jeremey Singh, Isaiah Layne, Niron Bissu, Khalil Ninvalle and Jonathan Van Lange among others should form the team who will look to protect the home turf against their counterparts from the other Caribbean territories.

On the girls side Priscillia Greaves will lead Guyana’s challenge in the girls 18 years and under, she will form alliance with young Neveah Clarkston, Salenas Jackman, Jamali Homer, Abidale Martin, Onieka Philips, Davona Bess, Thruraia Thomas and Christie Lopes among others to repel the efforts of the visitors will bring Guyana honours. The categories to be contested are: Boys – Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles and Girls – Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles in the respective age groups.
