CRG supports the stockpiling of rice during this period of potential conflict

The rice glut on the world market is a blessing in disguise. During this period of heightened tensions and potential war, we as a nation have an opportunity to build our grain reserves in anticipation of supply chain disruptions and shortages. For this reason, the stockpiling of our local grain should be encouraged. CRG supports this effort and would encourage the Government to do so in a way where the quality of the grain is preserved. We should also be ensuring that our farmers are able to meet break even targets for their production. Maintaining the viability of the industry during this period of potential war is essential to ensuring that our citizens have the food needed for future consumption during wartime.
The opportunity to pursue aged basmati rice production does also provide the added benefit of increasing the value of the grain if not used during the period of storage. We must also look at other areas of the agriculture sector, such as the area of legumes for additional stockpiling opportunities. Hopefully, Guyana will be instrumental in helping to reduce regional tensions and aid in removing the current threat of conflict. Once this has been accomplished free market forces should be allowed to continue with the minimum food reserves maintained. The positive impact of a free market economy on the cost of living should not be overlooked.
