Digicel donates $1M to fight cancer

Sponsorship Manager of Digicel Guyana, Louanna Abrams hands over the donation to Monette Harry of the Cancer Institute of Guyana

As part of their Cancer Awareness Month activities, Digicel Guyana has donated $1 million to the Cancer Institute of Guyana to help in the fight against the disease.
The telecommunication giant which recently re-launched as a digital operator across the Caribbean has utilised its music streaming app, D’Music, as the driver to raise funds toward the fight against cancer.
The digital operator matched every stream of their “Stream For a Cause” playlist for the month of October with US$1. These proceeds were then doubled and a timely donation was made to the Cancer Institute of Guyana.
Digicel has over the years been a very prominent contributor to the fight against cancer, which dates back to their sponsorship of the Avon Breast Cancer walk, followed by their very own “Ride For A Cause” cycle race.
“Ride For a Cause” ran for seven years and all registration proceeds from those races went toward the fight against cancer. More recently, Digicel has been taking initiatives such as “Stream For a Cause” to assist the Cancer Institute of Guyana by way of cash donations and event support.
“We are very pleased to be part of this cause and giving back in a tangible way is something that Digicel is committed to. We would like to thank the public for streaming the Fight Cancer playlist in D’Music, we were pleased with the response therefore decided to double the amount which brought the donation to $1 million dollars. We are indeed better together in this fight,” Sponsorship Manager Louanna Abrams noted.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Cancer Institute was Monette Harry, who expressed much appreciation to Digicel for their “thoughtful and generous” support towards breast cancer screening.
“Working with Digicel over the years has been tremendous, their support is always stellar,” Harry noted while adding that the donation will assist the Cancer Institute to provide free mammograms to women across Guyana.
