Fish found in toilet as vandalism reported 1 day after commissioning – US$10.8M Guyana-China Friendship Park

One day after the commissioning of the US$10.8 million Guyana-China Friendship Park on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD), the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) has raised concern over acts of vandalism affecting the facility’s newly installed sanitary services. In statement on Monday, the PAC said maintenance inspections revealed deliberate clogging of the park’s sewerage system with large quantities of industrial-grade tissue. In a further incident, a fish was discovered in a toilet bowl. The Commission warned that the actions could lead to serious plumbing failures and may result in temporary closure of sanitary units to facilitate emergency repairs.

The PAC said the park is under 24-hour CCTV surveillance and confirmed that footage will be reviewed to identify those responsible. It reiterated a zero-tolerance stance on the destruction of state property. “The PAC maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward the destruction of state property. Any individual found engaging in acts of vandalism or the deliberate sabotage of park facilities will be reported to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) immediately for criminal prosecution,” the statement said. The Commission urged visitors to exercise civic responsibility, including proper disposal of waste, appropriate use of sanitary facilities and reporting any suspicious behaviour to on-site security.
The Guyana-China Friendship Park, formerly Joe Vieira Park, was officially commissioned on Sunday as a modern recreational facility valued at US$10.8 million. The project features sporting areas, landscaped green spaces, walkways, and other amenities. It was described during the commissioning ceremony as a symbol of long-standing Guyana-China relations dating back to 1853 and formal diplomatic ties established in 1972. The PAC said the sustainability of the facility depends on public cooperation to ensure it remains accessible and functional for families, fitness users, and visitors.
