Ganja unearthed during Mazaruni Prison, Bartica hotel raids
Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) have unearthed a quantity of marijuana during raids conducted at the Mazaruni Prison and the Morocco Hotel in First Avenue Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
At the Mazaruni Prison on Tuesday, officials were conducting daily checks in and around the Mazaruni Prison and compound when they observed a prisoner acting in a suspicious manner. A search was conducted on his person, and, in his pants crotch, a bulky black parcel containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found.
Further searches were conducted in the Tuck Shop at the prison, and two bulky black parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found.
The narcotics, when weighed, amounted to 158 grams. The two other parcels were weighed separately, and amounted to 252 grams.
Also, on Tuesday, at about 17:30h, a party of Policemen conducted a raid at the Morocco Hotel in Bartica. Three male suspects were searched, and Police found four small Ziplock bags containing a quantity of cannabis.
Further searches were carried out in the room the men occupied, and a bulky, transparent parcel along with 21 small transparent parcels, all containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, were found.
The suspects deferred ownership to each other, and were all arrested and taken to the Bartica Police Station. The narcotics, when weighed, amounted to 560 grams.
The suspects remain in custody, pending charges. (G9)
