GFF trains 23 aspiring referees in Region 8

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in collaboration with the North Pakaraima Sports Committee, recently trained 23 aspiring match officials during a two-day Referees’ Workshop in Kato, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
The programme was held alongside the Region Eight Heritage Playoff Tournament and formed part of preparations for the upcoming Heritage Football Tournament.
The workshop also served as a recruitment drive for residents interested in pursuing refereeing beyond the Heritage Playoffs. Before the initiative, the North Pakaraima sub-region had only two certified referees.

Participants received detailed instruction on the 17 Laws of the Game, including recent changes and updates. They were later required to complete a theoretical assessment to test their understanding of the material covered.
The programme concluded with a practical field session during which the participants demonstrated their physical readiness and worked on the basic requirements of officiating.
The session focused on positioning, movement, signalling techniques, and the core mechanics needed to manage football matches effectively.

The GFF said the strong level of participation reflected the continued growth of football across Guyana and the increasing interest among residents in becoming involved in the sport in different capacities.
Through the workshop, the Federation is seeking to improve the number and quality of match officials available in Region Eight while creating opportunities for individuals to contribute to football development within their communities.
The GFF said it remain committed to strengthening refereeing capacity throughout Guyana and providing clear pathways for aspiring officials to advance in the sport.
