The initiative was spearheaded by Chairwoman of the Women’s Committee, Sub-Officer Franka Thomas, who emphasised the importance of ensuring that firefighters remain healthy and fit to effectively carry out their duties.
“The health of our ranks is paramount, since health is our first line of defence. This initiative is our way of ensuring that our firefighters are protected and cared for so that they can continue to effectively serve our nation,” Thomas said.
The exercise was supported by doctors and other healthcare personnel from the Health Ministry, who provided a range of essential services to firefighters. These included dental care, vaccinations, medical consultations, medication dispensing, nutrition and dietary guidance, eye testing, HIV counselling and testing, a blood drive, and voucher distribution.
The initiative provided ranks with convenient access to important healthcare services while reinforcing the need for regular health checks and preventative care.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and its Women’s Committee extend sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health, its doctors, healthcare professionals and other personnel for supporting the initiative and contributing to its success.
The GFS remains committed to initiatives that promote the health, safety and overall well-being of its ranks, recognising that a healthy workforce is essential to providing effective service to the people of Guyana.
