Guyana targets Brazil’s Challenger spot at Caribbean 3×3 Lite Quest

Guyana will be aiming to secure a place at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 Challenger in Brazil when they compete in the Caribbean Clash Lite Quest tournament in Suriname this weekend.
The two-day event, scheduled for May 1–2 under the FIBA 3×3 framework, will feature eight teams battling for regional honours and a coveted qualification spot to the Challenger tournament later this month. That pathway offers teams a chance to move closer to the prestigious FIBA 3×3 World Tour.

Guyana’s 3×3 team, Renegades (L-R): Akil Hughes, Travis Belgrave, Nikkoloi Smith and Shelroy Thomas

Representing Guyana are Akil Hughes, Nikkoloi Smith, Travis Belgrave and Shelroy Thomas, with Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) Vice President Rawle Toney serving as team manager. The team’s participation has been made possible through support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), Guyana Breweries Inc, and former West Indies cricketer Ramnaresh Sarwan.
According to the Guyana Basketball Federation, the tournament serves more than just a qualification opportunity. It also forms part of Guyana’s preparation for upcoming international assignments, including the Commonwealth Games and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.
Both events are expected to mark historic first appearances for Guyana in 3×3 basketball, making every competitive outing crucial for development and exposure.
In recent years, Guyana’s 3×3 programme has shown steady growth, with increased regional participation and a stronger focus on structured preparation. The Suriname tournament is therefore seen as an important benchmark against some of the Caribbean’s top teams.
