“Last year it was held in Trinidad and this year we are grateful that we’ll be the host country… we will have about 12 Caribbean islands coming here to do the silver and the gold expedition and we will be taking them to our beautiful Rupununi region. You will be seeing over 160 individuals coming to do the hiking, as we would call it, the adventurous journey,” Collins disclosed.
Propelled under the theme “Legend of the eleven giants”, this expedition aims to promote the virgin beauty of Guyana by exposing participants to (giant) wildlife in the Rupununi District, Region Nine.
PYARG is a voluntary programme, which enables youths between the ages of 14 and 24 with non-formal platform, which entails a balanced programme of activities designed to boost one’s skills in fostering social-economic enhancement for personal development, while seeking to maximise potential.
Collins noted that the programme which is established in all 10 administrative regions (in most schools, community and church groups) seeks to foster discipline and social cohesion among diverse youths while exposing them to the rare parts of Guyana via an annual expedition undertaken at different stages; Bronze, Silver and Gold.
“PYARG forges selflessness and for love of our country and patriotism we try to expose young people to various parts of Guyana; for example this year we will be taking the Gold participants to Kaieteur, not many Guyanese have the opportunity to boast that they would’ve hiked the majestic waterfall.
The bronze participants will be going to Regions One [Barima-Waini], Two [Pomeroon-Supenaam], Nine and 10 [Upper Demerara-Berbice], while silver participants will be going to Regions Seven [Cuyuni-Mazaruni] as well as Eight [Potaro-Siparuni].”
PYARG in collaboration with other non-governmental organisations have been actively involved in community services such as clean-up campaigns, literacy awareness and specific training programmes in areas such as entrepreneurship and agriculture.
