Heavy-duty truck topples into Princes Street Canal

The driver of a heavy-duty truck was extremely lucky to emerge unscathed after his vehicle toppled into the Princes Street Canal on Sunday afternoon, breaking a pipeline and leaving scores without water.
According to residents, the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car and ended up in the trench near 17-17 Princes Street around 12:00h, partly as a result of the degraded road shoulder. They say the road shoulder was almost non-existent after desilting and other drainage work in the area. After strenuous effort by heavy-duty machinery, the truck was pulled from the trench later that afternoon.
