Hurricanes vs Red Force match abandoned following dangerous pitch conditions – West Indies Championships…

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Tuesday announced that the second match of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes vs Trinidad and Tobago Red Force bilateral series in the 2026 West Indies Championship has been abandoned and determined to be a draw, due to dangerous pitch conditions at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.
CWI informed on Tuesday that play was halted during the first session of the third day after the pitch began to exhibit unpredictable and uneven behaviour, raising serious concerns for player safety. During this period, Leeward Islands player Jeremiah Louis was struck while batting. He was immediately attended to by medical personnel and subsequently transported to hospital to be evaluated for a possible concussion and is reported to be in stable condition.

Jayden Seales had already picked up 10 wickets in the game

The decision to abandon the match was made in accordance with the official playing conditions governing the competition. Under these conditions, when on-field umpires determine that it is dangerous or unreasonable for play to continue, play must be stopped and the CWI Match Referee consulted.
Following discussions with the curator, it was determined that the pitch could not be safely repaired without creating an unfair advantage and was, therefore, deemed unfit for play to resume, resulting in the match being abandoned as a draw. Both teams will be awarded points earned up until the abandonment of the contest in accordance with the Championship’s rules.

The West Indies Championship match was abandoned at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium

CWI further advised that no matches are scheduled for the Sir Viv Richards Stadium until the Championship final, set for May 17–20, and confirmed that all necessary resources and expertise would be deployed to ensure the preparation of a safe and competitive playing surface for that fixture. It is also important to note that the surface used for the Leeward Islands vs Trinidad and Tobago match is one of six pitches available at the venue and differs from the one used for match one of the Guyana vs Windward Islands series.
CWI noted that it would continue to prioritise player safety while ensuring the highest standards of pitch preparation and match operations across all venues.
After winning the toss and electing to field on Sunday, Red Force made immediate inroads as the Leeward Islands were bowled out for 131 in 39.3 overs. Karmia Gore stood firm with a patient 57 from 90 balls, anchoring the innings amid regular wickets. Anderson Phillip was the chief destroyer, producing a superb spell of 6 for 38, while Jayden Seales provided strong support with three wickets.
In reply, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force posted 175 in 60 overs to secure a 44-run first-innings lead. Jyd Goolie led the effort with a composed unbeaten 51 from 95 deliveries, striking six fours and a six. Joshua Da Silva added a valuable 36 as the Red Force batsmen grafted steadily against disciplined bowling.
Set back early in their second innings, the Leeward Islands found resistance through Mikyle Louis, who compiled a determined 73, and Jahmar Hamilton, who contributed 41 from 69 balls, including five boundaries. However, Seales delivered a devastating spell, claiming seven wickets to leave the Leeward Islands struggling at 140 for 7 before the match was called off.
