Junior Inter-County T20 tournament: Demerara record easy win over Essequibo

Action continued in the Junior Inter-County T20 tournament with Demerara Women’s U-19 duking it out with Essequibo Women’s U-19.

The one-sided affair saw Demerara Women’s U-19 storming to victory by 9 wickets at the Everest Cricket Club. Batting first, Essequibo were restricted to 98-6 in their allotted 20 overs. Naomi Barkoye was instrumental with the ball as the bagged two wickets in the opening overs, bamboozling both players. To make matters worse, she returned in her next over to pick up another wicket, to have Essequibo reeling at 9-3.
After the first three wickets fell, Essequibo were never the same as, one by one, wickets continued to tumble. Areah Ally added her name to the tally with two wickets to tighten things, drying up the flow of runs.
Added to the wickets tumbling, Demerara were successful in the fielding department, as they hardly missed an opportunity. At the end of the 20 overs, Essequibo could only muster 32 runs, at the expense of six wickets, but 39 wides and 27 no balls pushed the total to 98, giving them some hope and something to fight for.
Bowling for Demerara, Naomi Barkoye took 3-9, Areah Ally took 2-22 and Akeelah Eastman took 1-17.
Heading into the chase with just 98 required from 120 balls, Demerara were off to aflying start, and ended on 99-1 in 14.3 overs. Aneesa Chetram was the first to go, But Barkoye and Melanie Dover held the fort and got their team over the line despite their slow scoring. Barkoye remained not out on 28 and Dover on 12, in addition to the 41 wides and 14 no balls from Essequibo.
