Former West Indies U-16 fast bowler Qumar Torrington will, for the second time, be involved in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Under-19 tournament, which bowls off later this month.

A Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) player, he always was a certain pick to participate in the Guyana Under-19 Team this year, and it is expected that he would be given the task of leading the pace attack.
Currently working on his fitness as he prepares for this assignment, which will be played in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Torrington spoke exclusively with this reporter as he disclosed the following information about himself.
He was born on September 16, 2000, and has come through the proverbial ranks. He represented Guyana in U-15 and U-17 tournaments, and will be representing Guyana again in the U-19 tournament.
As a prospective future West Indies right-arm fast bowler, Torrington has also been exposed to franchise cricket, having played for Georgetown senior team in the Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) Franchise League.
When Guyana won the CWI Regional U-19 tournament in 2018, Torrington was present in that victorious Guyana team, and this would have given him confidence.
“My experience will boost my confidence, and I know what to expect and how competitive the tournament is. I have a good idea of how I need to prepare myself to be successful at this level”, Torrington disclosed.
He is aiming to “deliver the goods” with the ball, and give his team the early breakthrough when given the opportunity.
During the 2019 Hand-in-Hand U-19 Inter-County tournament, Torrington played for the victorious one-day team, Demerara. Reflecting on his performances, he declared them acceptable, since he delivered when the team requested of him.
Torrington is a player who is always aiming to improve his game. He said he would be looking to get some variation in his bowling and step up his pace heading into the 2019 Regional U-19 tournament, which will be played only in the one-day format.
Torrington disclosed that since the inter-county matches, he has been seeking to improve his pace and at the same time work on his batting, wherein he has shown considerable capability, having recorded a high score of 93 against the Malteenoes U-19 Team.
He explained that his fitness is on point, but he continues to work since he has an understanding of how important it is to maintain fitness.
Known for getting quick four-wicket hauls, Torrington has a best bowling figure of 4-13 against the Malteenoes; and has also stamped his authority in the senior CGI Franchise, where he grabbed a four-wicket haul and registered a man-of-the-match performance.
Torrington is undoubtedly on his way to greatness, and has indicated that he wants to thank those who have thus far played a role in his journey.
“I must thank God first of all; He is the One who would have been giving me health and strength to make it through every challenge,” Torrington declared.
Torrington has also expressed deep gratitude to his parents, who have played a great role in ensuring that he remains focused on his career; and he also thanks his coaches: former West Indies fast bowler Corey Collymore, who played a role in his West Indies U-16s stint in England; Julian Moore, the Guyana U-19 coach; and Garvin Nedd, his DCC coach, who have all played a role in his success thus far.
Additionally, Torrington would like to recognise all those from the DCC and among his friends who have motivated him. “I would like to thank Mr Dennis Squires, who will always ensure, when a tournament is looming, that we are fully equipped”, Torrington explained.
Torrington is expected to lead the pace attack for the Guyana U-19 team, but he is counting on support from Kevlon Anderson and Leon Swamy, who are the other pacemen.
Since this Regional tournament will be used as a measure to select the West Indies U-19 team, Torrington will be aiming to produce his ‘A’ game in order to be picked for higher representation.
