A man who allegedly killed his former father-in-law during a scuffle was on Friday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he made a virtual appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Zakir Hossain was not required to plead to the indictable offence which stated that on June 25, 2020, at Riverview Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he murdered Alexi Gomes.
It was reported that on June 21, 2020, Gomes saw the suspect and his grandson in the area and stretched out his arms to hug the little boy but Hossain reportedly got angry and punched him.
It was also reported that a scuffle ensued between the 54-year-old man and the suspect during which Hossain picked up a piece of wood and dealt him several blows to his head.
The man was picked up in an unconscious state by a relative and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he succumbed a few days later.
A post-mortem examination (PME) revealed that Gomes’ cause of death was as a result of blunt trauma to the head.
The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station, and Hossain was arrested following an investigation. The suspect will make his next court appearance today.
