Milo Schools Under-18 Football action heats up over the weekend

Littered with declarations that Gender Based Violence is a disease in modern society, the Milo Schools Under-18 Football tournament continued on Saturday afternoon at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
With three matches scheduled for the day, the school-aged spectators often heard reasons to stand against domestic abuse and violence from the captains of each team, as part of the tournament’s collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health’s (MoPH’s) Stop Gender Based Violence campaign.
After the formalities, the youths took to the playing field to try to secure much needed points for their schools, in hopes of advancing out of the rocky round robin stage.
The first two teams to face off on Saturday were Georgetown-based Charlestown Secondary and Tutorial High School. Both sides were intent on winning, and showed these intentions from the first sound of the whistle as they both opted for an attacking style of play. A more composed Charlestown Secondary were the ones to be rewarded first for their determination, as Raymond Bandhu found the back of the net in the 12th minute. The back and forth went on, but the Tutorial strikers weren’t able to pierce the net of the capable Charlestown goalkeeper.
The second half saw a more aggressive Tutorial hoping to find the equaliser, but their closest attempt sailed a few inches above the crossbar and the goalkeeper, much to Tutorial’s dismay. Tariq Pryce extended the Charlestown lead in the 56th with a powerful strike into the net, and the encounter expired quickly, with Charlestown managing to hold off Tutorial for a 2-0 win.
The second game of the day featured East Coast’s Golden Grove and West Coast’s Uitvlugt Secondary. It was an encounter that promised to be an exciting one, judging from the first five minutes of play, and it eventually went down to the wire, as both teams had their share of chances, attempts and near misses, resulting in a nil all score at the end of regulation time.
The same fate befell the encounter between Friendship Secondary and St John’s College, as they also played to a scoreless stalemate.
The Milo action will continue over the weekend with three more fixtures scheduled for today. Playing at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue, Vergenoegen Secondary will battle with Tucville Secondary. The second game billed will see Ann’s Grove Secondary looking to cut down the dominant Christianburg Wismar Secondary School. The final game will feature St. Cuthbert’s Mission taking on Cummings Lodge. The first ball is expected to kick off at noon.
