The GT Beer/BFA/Candy Boss and Antics Promotion inaugural invitational Inter Club 8-A -Side Football Tournament kicked off on Friday night with a tripleheader at the All Saints School Ground on Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
In the opening game, Monedderlust came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 over Orealla Falcons. Ricardo Morgown opened the scoring to give the boys from the Corentyne River community the lead, but Jamal Joseph answered back for the West Berbice team with an equalizer.
Orealla took the lead again when Kevin Dick scored and went further ahead when Veral Felix registered his name of the scoring cards.
At halftime, the score was 3-1 in favor of Orealla but Kevin Cottoy scored a hat-trick to turn the table around by the time the final whistle came.
In another game, Fyrish Black Sharks were unable to take full points from Mahaicony FC and had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their encounter.
Linden Joseph scored for the Black Sharks while Mahaicony got their goal off the both of Ruel Chester.
Hopetown FC got a rude awakening when they came up against Orealla ‘A’ (Siparuta) and despite taking the initial lead. Darrel Douglas sent them into the lead but it was short-lived as Issac Williams equalized to ensure a 1-1 draw.
Action in the competition continues tonight with three more games.
It the opening game Edinburgh Gunners will take on Republic FC at 19:00h to be followed by the encounter between Golden Star and Young Strikers FC.
The final game of the evening will bring together Georgetown Police and Corriverton Links FC. Eighteen teams will be participating in the tournament with two groups of four and two of five teams each.
Group A consists of Monedderlust FC, Orealla Falcons, Wool’s United FC and Mahaica Determinators FC. Group B; Mahaicony FC, Black Sharks FC, GT Police and Corriverton Links FC; Group C Siparuta FC, Hopetown FC Ann’s Grove, Berbice Police and Beacons FC; Group D Edinburgh Gunners FC, Republicans FC, Rosignol United, Golden Stars FC and Young Strikers FC.
Matches will be played on a round robin basis in the group stage with the top two in each group advancing to the knock out stage.
Games will be played on Friday and Sunday evening at the same venue. The final is listed for New Year’s Day.
The winning team is assured of $500,000 with an equal amount to be shared between the other three top finishers to round out the $1M cash prizes.
Meanwhile, Monedderlust won the march pass held on Friday evening to kick off the tournament.
