The weather conditions in Guyana continue to be uncertain, and as a result, horsemen are tentative to enter for the Independence horse race meet.
Eight races are now carded for May 31 at Port Mourant Turf Club, and close to 10 million in cash and prizes will be up for the taking.
The Independence Cup will have a purse of GY$1,875,000, and it will feature horses in the C Class and lower, running at 6.5 furlongs. The winner will have a winners’ prize of GY$1,000,000.

Other races on the provisional card include the F Class and Lower and three-year-old Guyana-bred non-winners of two races. The additional races are the H Class non-winners in Guyana, open to WI bred non-winners for one year; also open to three-year-old WI bred of two races, the H Class open; I Class and lower three-year-old and upwards; K and L Class open four years old and upwards; and the L Class maidens four years old and upwards.
All of the races, with the exception of the K and L Class open to four-year-olds, will run at 6.5 furlongs. That particular race will run at 7 3/4 furlongs.
All horsemen are expected to pay 50 per cent of their entry fee by today, Wednesday May 27, ahead of Sunday’s race meet.
The Independence horse race will run under the Guyana Rules of Racing. This race is organised by the Jumbo Jet Racing Committee in collaboration with Khris Jagdeo General Contractor.
