Plum Park, South Sophia youth to benefit from NSC donation

The National Sports Commission (NSC) continued its community outreach efforts this week with the distribution of a quantity of footballs to youths in Farmers Field, Plum Park, South Sophia, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots sport and youth engagement.
The initiative was led by Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, following direct intervention from community leader Andre Jackman, who advocated on behalf of young players in the area.
Jackman expressed gratitude for the timely support, noting that the equipment will play a critical role in sustaining youth involvement in football, particularly with the recent upgrades to the community ground.

“This distribution came at a meaningful time, where it will be used to help engage our youths and help them to utilise the ball field which was recently upgraded by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports,” Jackman said.
He explained that football remains the sport of choice among many young people in South Sophia, but access to proper equipment has often been a challenge.
“With the playfield recently upgraded, it has now become a space where many of them are meaningfully occupied, and this support will only enhance that,” Jackman said.
In an invited comment, Ninvalle reiterated the NSC’s commitment to supporting communities across Guyana, emphasising that initiatives like these are part of a broader national effort to promote sport at the grassroots level.
“The NSC has always assisted communities throughout Guyana, and Sophia is no different,” Ninvalle stated. “With many community grounds being upgraded by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, it is important that these facilities are fully utilised, especially by our young people.”
He added that providing basic sporting equipment is essential to ensuring that investments in infrastructure translate into real opportunities for youth development.
