Road safety re-emphasised during awareness campaign

The National Road Safety Council, in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the West Demerara Association hosted a road safety awareness campaign on Tuesday, in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market Square. The aim of the initiative was to sensitise the public on the importance of road safety.

The initiative, which commenced at 09:30h, lasted for most of the day. Co-coordinator of the National Road Safety Council, Ramona Doorgen, reiterated that

the campaign was used to educate and remind persons of the importance of road safety.

She further explained that the Stabroek venue was chosen because it is ideally located, as many persons are likely to traverse this area on a daily basis. When questioned about her confidence in persons actually adhering to the rules, she said that if one life can be saved, it’s worth the effort. Another member of the council explained that their purpose is to interact with the public and the campaign intends to reach across the country. He reminded of the statistics with regards to fatal accidents and pointed to the comparison over the years.

Several persons expressed their support of the movement in light of the many road fatalities for the year thus far.
