West Indies Head Coach Darren Sammy praised his team’s composure and intelligent cricket after they secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the decisive third T20 International at Sabina Park on Sunday night, sealing a 2-1 series triumph.
In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Caribbean side chased down their target with just two balls to spare, ending a lengthy wait for another T20 series victory on home soil. In the aftermath, Sammy expressed his delight at the result, highlighting the team’s calm approach under pressure.
“I wasn’t too nervous. I was just hoping that we get over the line,” Sammy said after the match. “Today it was a lot more thoughtful and smart cricket, especially by Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford, followed by Jason Holder.”
The Coach credited the bowlers for laying the foundation for the victory, with fast bowler Shamar Joseph once again making a significant impact.
“I think the game was set up, up front, when we bowled. Shamar Joseph continues to impress,” Sammy noted. “We needed a victory. It’s been a while since we won a T20 series at home. In front of the Jamaican fans, I know they wanted a victory for us, so I’m glad that we could finish the series on a high.”
Joseph’s performances throughout the series earned special praise from the Coach, while veteran all-rounder Jason Holder was recognised for his influence both on and off the field.
“Shamar stood out really well. Jason continues to lead, not only with his actual skills, but through his leadership and helping out the bowlers on the field. We saw how much we missed his experience in the second game,” Sammy opined.
Despite the series’ success, Sammy emphasised the importance of developing emerging talent. Youngsters Akeem Auguste and Shamar Springer were given opportunities during the series, gaining valuable international experience despite not producing the results they had hoped for.
The all-format Head Coach remarked, “We gave some youngsters a couple of games. Yes, they didn’t perform the way they wanted to, but all in all, getting a series win after almost two years is something to be proud of.”
Looking ahead, the West Indies Coach stressed that the team’s long-term focus remains on building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, with preparations already underway for future global tournaments, including the road toward Australia 2028.
Sammy also highlighted the team’s ability to remain calm in crucial moments as a key takeaway from the series.
“Being under pressure today and having the nerve, the calm and the cricket smarts to do what it takes to come out over the line, that was special,” he said.
With experienced performers stepping up and young talents gaining exposure, the Caribbean side will hope this memorable triumph at Sabina Park marks the beginning of a sustained period of success in T20 cricket.
