St Pius, South Ruimveldt strike gold as Smalta U11 continues

The Smalta Girls 11-and-Under Football tournament continued in a mixture of sunshine and rain yesterday, and with two rounds of play.
The day’s action got off to an exciting start, as defending champions South Ruimveldt powered to their second win of the 2018 tournament, this time over St. Stephen’s Primary.
South’s Fayan Harry opened the scoring early when she netted two goals in the first half of the game to put South in the lead.
St. Stephen’s got their groove in the second half when Sara Williams connected their first goal. However, South’s defence went to work, preventing St. Stephen’s from being successful again; which meant a 2-0 win for the defending champions.
The second game of the day was even more exciting, as the St. Pius girls followed in their male counterparts’ footsteps. Little Marissa Frank got the scoreboard ticking as early as possible, as she netted the team’s first goal in the first minute of play.
Christal Acker was the next player to add to the tally, in the 8th minute; and then Anthea Braithwaite connected back-to-back goals in the 10 and 13th minutes to put St. Pius at 4-0 by the half.
Play continued in attacking strides, depriving St. Margaret’s of ball possession. Tehana Mendonca and Shevon John each found the back of the net in the second half, to push St. Pius’s winning tally to 6-0.
The clash between North Georgetown Primary and Smith Memorial followed. It was a stiff game during the first half, when either team failed to score. However, in the second, Smith Memorial’s defense was penetrated twice — by Martha Chance in the 22nd and the 25th minutes for North Georgetown’s 2-0 win.
Enterprise Primary also won by a similar margin when they met FE Pollard. Audain Denita and Allegra Williams could be thanked for the team’s 2-0 victory.
The final match of Round Two came when West Ruimveldt and Tucville Primary met on the playing field. It was truly a display of skill from both teams, but West Ruimveldt eventually emerged victorious after Shellon David netted the lone and winning goal of the game.
