Suspect confesses to robbing Cricket Coach’s wife

After hours of intense grilling, the suspect who was nabbed in connection with the robbery of a mother of two on Monday at Sheriff Street, Georgetown, has confessed to the crime.
Lestra Crandon, the wife of current Coach of the national cricket team, Esuan Crandon, was in the company of her two daughters when two men pounced on her as she stopped to make a purchase at a fast food outlet, escaping with her handbag and its contents, which included a cheque worth 0,000, 0,000 in cash, debit cards, passports, mobile phones and other important documents.
Shortly after the robbery, Police arrested an individual; however, the man denied his involvement in the robbery although he was positively identified by the victim. He was not found in possession of any of the stolen items, leaving detectives to believe that he handed over the bag, which he snatched from the woman, to his accomplices.
Moreover, Guyana Times was told by Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Guyana Police Force, Jairam Ramlakhan, on Tuesday that the suspect had confessed to the crime and had been assisting with further investigations as officers hunt for his two accomplices.
This newspaper was made to understand that the suspect in custody has been a person of interest in several investigations of similar nature.
Reports from Monday’s incident revealed that the suspect, along with two others, drove up in a car and he exited, confronting Crandon before grabbing the bag.
The traumatised woman had related to this publication that she stopped to purchase pizza for her daughter, who celebrated her birthday on Monday. She continued that a man confronted her and held onto her bag, and soon after another joined in and attempted to relieve her of the car keys.
At that time, she noted she was fearful for her life and her two daughters’.
She explained that prior to the robbery, she conducted a transaction at a city bank and believed that she might have been followed by the men.
“I don’t know where these guys came from… they came onto me suddenly, but I tried to fight them off… one of them remain in a car and the two others were fighting with me,” she added.
Crandon related that an alarm was raised and persons around ran to her rescue, but the men had already taken her handbag and escaped.
