Taxi drivers slapped with illegal possession of ammo charge

Two taxi drivers who were each reportedly busted with one live round of .9mm ammunition were on Tuesday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on separate possession of ammunition charges.
The drivers: 30-year-old Herishwar Veersammy of Lot 75 Herstelling New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, who is attached to the Frontline Taxi Service; and 21-year-old Devindra Sammy of Farm, East Bank Demerara, both denied the allegation

when it was read to them.
Each offence is alleged to have been committed on August 19, 2018, at Farm, East Bank Demerara.
According to Defence Attorney George Thomas, his clients were not found with the unlicensed ammunition on their persons, but the ammunition was in their motor vehicles, PVV 1984 and PNN 9864 respectively, which are used to transport passengers daily.
In his application for bail, the lawyer expressed his clients’ willingness to have their travel documents lodged as a condition to bail.
The Police prosecutor has no objection to the defendants being placed on bail, and each man was placed on $50,000 bail. The case will continue on September 10.
