Tertiary/University Basketball League: GTI, UG, LTI among others record wins

The action in the Tertiary/University Basketball League continued on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, as Government Technical Institute (GTI), New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), Linden Technical Institute (LTI) and the University of Guyana (UG) among others recorded comfortable wins.

Shamar Savory led with 15 points

Heading into the penultimate round this Sunday, the teams will be raring for the highly-anticipated semi-finals, which are set for 16:00h at the same venue. In game one, UG will lock horns with New Amsterdam Technical Institute while in game two, GTI will face LTI.
Earlier, GTI stayed perfect as they wrapped up the preliminaries with a relaxed 69 points to 57 points win over a much-improved Port Mourant Training Centre team. Leading the way for GTI were their reserves with Josiah Robert and Leron Thom both recording double-doubles – 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 points, 10 rebounds respectively. Most Valuable Player (MVP) candidate Kobe Tappin chipped in with 12 points. The Corentyne boys had their best stat line with Joseph Daniels scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds, Shaquan Lucas 14 points and 10 rebounds, Angelino Ramdial 13 points, and Michael Jordan 12 points.
In the second game, LTI were the superior team, recording their first win of the tournament to clinch a place in the semi-finals, defeating the talented but coachless Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) team by 61 points to 46 points. Captain Shamar Savory led the way with 15 points and 15 rebounds, Ming Wong supported with a rare 11 points and 10 steals double-double. For GSA, Jushawn Bayley ended with another good showing of 19 points, 7 rebounds, and Richard Semple added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Shaquawn Gill scored 25 points

The final game of the night saw UG finishing the round-robin round as the clear number two with a 69 points to 58 points statement win against a tough NATI team. Shaquawn Gill once again showed his class with an impressive 25 points, 14 rebounds performance, making the claim as a front-runner for the tournament’s MVP award, which is sponsored by the Fireside Suites. Kwesi Roberts pitched in with 10 points and 6 rebounds, for the winners. For NATI, the talented Qwesi Joseph had 17 points and 6 assists, and Charles Williams finished with yet another double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
