Trinidadian cricket enthusiast donates bats to Guyana youth cricket project

Trinidad and Tobago businessman and cricketer Amzad Mohammed has donated two bats to the “Cricket Gear for Young and Promising Cricketers in Guyana” project, which has directly assisted 108 male and female players across the country’s three counties.
Mohammed made the donation during a recent visit to Guyana with the Valley Boys masters cricket team of South Trinidad. The initiative is jointly managed by Guyana’s Anil Beharry and USA-based Kishan Das.
A medium-pace bowling all-rounder who participates in goodwill tours across the Caribbean and North America, Mohammed said he had been following the project and was impressed by its reach, particularly among young people. He also supports charitable activities in Trinidad and Tobago.
The organisers thanked Mohammed for his contribution, noting that continued support helps provide equipment to promising players while encouraging young people to become involved in sport.
Since its establishment, the project has received $843,146 in cash, along with donated or purchased equipment including 51 bats, 40 pairs of batting pads, 48 pairs of batting gloves and 36 pairs of cricket shoes. Other contributions include protective gear, uniforms, bags, cricket balls, training accessories, and 28 footballs. Former national wicketkeeper-batsman Sheik Mohamed separately contributed equipment valued at more than $600,000.
Cash contributions are used to purchase requested equipment that the project does not have available.
Direct assistance to the 108 players has included cash, 43 bats, 39 pairs of cricket shoes, 23 pairs of batting pads, 42 pairs of batting gloves and other equipment. According to the organisers, some beneficiaries have gone on to represent the West Indies at various levels.
Clubs, schools, and cricket organisations have also received assistance, extending the project’s reach beyond individual players. Beneficiaries span communities in Pomeroon, Leguan, Wakenaam, Lethem, Demerara and Berbice, with support reaching youth programmes, school teams, and male and female hardball and softball players.
Among those assisted are the Essequibo Cricket Board; West Demerara Cricket Association; Malteenoes Sports Club; Tucber Park, Blairmont and Port Mourant cricket clubs; St Cuthbert’s Mission and several secondary schools. Contributions have included balls, bats, uniforms, protective equipment, and other supplies.
New and used equipment is distributed free of charge. Cricketing ability, discipline, and commitment to education guide the selection of recipients, while club leaders help identify promising players across Guyana. Well-managed clubs with youth programmes are also eligible for support.
The organisers acknowledged the backing of individuals, businesses, and cricket clubs in Guyana and overseas. Supporters include West Indian Sports Complex, P and P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Ltd, Cricket Zone USA, Trophy Stall, Star Sports Awards and Trophies, Cricket Equipment Guyana, Regal Sports Store, Rockaway Group of Companies, NALICO/NAFICO and Valley Boys, alongside numerous other donors.
The project will continue distributing equipment as part of its effort to support young cricketers and encourage positive involvement in sport.
