Turmoil continues in Berbice Cricket

There continues to be an ongoing spat with members of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) in coming to a definitive conclusion on the way forward for the board considering there is an injunction placed against the board by Godwyn Allicock and David Black.

The rational being the injunction stemmed from the fact that Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club along with Young Achievers were inadvertently omitted from the Guyana Cricket Administration Act 2014 as voting members and would have

participated in the elections to elect Anil Beharry and executive, which the plaintiffs of the injunction deemed to be illegal.

However, the issue at hand now stems from the fact that Beharry recently resigned from the post as President after his executive tenure would have dissolved from December 31, 2016. Since his resignation, 1st Vice-president Dhieranidranauth Somwaru assumed the responsibility of President.

Guyana Times Sport was on Thursday provided with documents with Somwaru assigning to the post of President and “dismissing” members of the board, during his time in office so far.

An official close to the matter told this publication that the decisions were unwarranted and they were done so without the permission of the board’s executives and more the letters given stated that Somwaru was President of the board.”

Those dismissed were Julian Cambridge, Hubert Evans (30 years of membership),

Malcom Peters (life member, 35 years membership), Keith Foster (former President), Rabindranauth Seeram and Albert Smith.

In an invited commented on the matter, Somwaru stated that these persons were not elected members but rather appointed by the former President and he “rescinded” their services since “they are not functioning.”

Somwaru furthered added that “I want honest people who are willing to work over and beyond to get Berbice cricket moving forward.”

However, some of the affected officials believe that the “dismissal letters” were influenced by some in higher authority as a way of taking control of the BCB.

Intriguingly Somwaru revealed that he “believes he can get the persons who currently have the injunction against the board to drop the matter” and that he was asked to take control of the board of the county’s affair can so it can be sorted. However, Somwaru was not willing to disclose who was or were the person(s) that asked him to undertake this job, adding that he is not a “puppet” of the GCB.

Somwaru who is also the President of the Guyana Cricket Umpire Council is in firm belief that a partnership with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) is integral for the county’s cricket to grow.

Meanwhile, President of the GCB, Drubahadur stated that the matter said that he did not know of the dismissals but explained that at the GCB’s last Annual General Meeting, “there was large contingent from Berbice and they want to move-on, recognizing that not being part of the GCB, they are suffering, and Mr. Somwaru in his capacity wants to move the situation forward.”
