US Deputy Assistant Secretary to visit Guyana today
United States Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) for Caribbean Affairs and Haiti, Barbara A Feinstein is expected to arrive in Guyana today, for a two-day visit that will include meetings with a number of key stakeholders.
According to a statement from the US Embassy, Feinstein is expected to meet with Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, members of the parliamentary Opposition, Caricom officials and members of the Private Sector and civil society.
Feinstein will depart Guyana on March 26. According to the statement heralding her arrival, Feinstein’s visit underscores the continued importance the United States places on the US-Guyana partnership.
According to her bio, Feinstein is a career member of the Senior Executive Service. Prior to serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Caribbean Affairs and Haiti, she had served as Deputy Assistant Administrator for Caribbean Affairs, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, and Central America with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
She has held various leadership positions within USAID, including Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Legislative Affairs; Deputy Chief of Staff to Administrator Rajiv Shah, Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor to Acting Administrator Alonzo Fulgham, and Special Assistant to Administrator Henrietta Fore. Other assignments include service with the US Departments of State and Defence.
Feinstein has served on the professional staff of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations and the House International Relations Committee of the United States Congress.
She holds a master’s degree in International and Public Affairs from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, Spanish and Portuguese from the University of California-Berkeley. According to the State Department, Feinstein speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
Feinstein’s visit follows the visit of other high-profile American officials, such as former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who visited in 2020 not long after the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C Government came to power, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of America’s development bank, Adam Boehler, who also visited in 2020.
