Venues, athletes ready for Nationals ― GTU President

The opening of the 56th Ministry of Education (MoE), Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships is just five days away and everything is on track for the hosting of the event.
According to President of the GTU, Mark Lyte, all the venues and athletes are ready and rearing for next week’s championships.
At the launching of Nationals, it was revealed that there will be the usual 15 districts on board however, Region eight was not registered at the time and has since make good of their registration, allowing in excess of 1500 athletes to participate from across the 15 districts.

As per norm, the athletes will be housed in the ‘game villages’ which established by using schools from Woolford Avenue, i.e. Richard Ishmeal Secondary, North Georgetown Secondary, North Georgetown Primary, Stella Maris Primary and Tutorial High School.
However, the venues will see cycling moving away from the National Stadium, Providence, to the National Park, Thomas Lands while swimming will be at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal and Track and Field remaining at Providence.
Lyte said that “the GTU has already been engaged with discussions with the management of the venues” and believes that “everything is set and it will be a successful championships.”
Monday the competition opens with Cycling, Swimming and a 10K road race running simultaneously before the opening ceremony at the National Stadium the following day.
Lyte explained that the ever dependent police presence will once again be at the venues as well as the game village.
Fourteen time winners, Upper Demerara/Kwakwani (Linden) District 10 are the defending champions but 14 time champions as well, North Georgetown will have blood in their eyes as they look to dethrone the District 10 and once again be the most successful District in the Championships.
