Twenty-five golfers participated in the Roy’s Pharmacy/Hope Coconut Industries golf tournament on Saturday last at Lusignan Golf Club, and Tom Watkins emerged as the overall winner.
There was an approximately 15-minute delay in starting owing to rain, but there was no further delay once the tournament got started. Watkins had hc 9 gross 74 net 65, second was Paton George – hc 14 gross 82 net 68, third was Anand Persaud with hc 25 gross 94 net 69 and fourth was Mario Acuna with hc 27 gross 97 net 70.
Speaking on behalf of the LGC executive committee, Vice President Paton George extended appreciation to the co-sponsors for their partnership and commitment in making this tournament an annual event. The great work done in environmentally-friendly farming by Hope Coconut Industries was on full display during the trophy presentation – guests were given a variety of coconut plants and in addition, plants were donated to the Golf Club to be planted.
George went on to say, “We especially like to thank the main sponsor, Roy’s Pharmacy – this neighbourhood pharmacy is a staple in the heart of Georgetown and we extend heartfelt appreciation to the team at Roy’s. Finally, we are always glad to have first-time winners and challenge the champ Tom Watkins of ExxonMobil to try next week to repeat as champion. Tom was very proud to have accomplished this feat and said in his acceptance speech that even though he got off to a rough start with a double bogey on the first hole, he calmed himself down by just enjoying the outing, and the good results followed. Tom has been competing for a chance to win over the last few months and was finally successful. His game is strong enough to win again, but the competition will be stiff.”
Roy’s Pharmacy, located in the Bourda Market, provides affordable medicines to the Guyanese people. Hope Coconut Industries is leading the way in the revitalisation of the coconut industry in Guyana – two Guyanese businesses showing good corporate social responsibility and supporting golf.
