WCB youth dies; teenage girl injured as car turns turtle

A 21-year-old man is dead, while a teenage girl is injured after he reportedly lost control of the car they were traveling in while negotiating a turn along the Number Six Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB), on Sunday evening. Dead is 21-year-old Afridi Rahaman of Bath Plantation, WCB. According to reports, the accident occurred at about 20:20h as Rahaman was negotiating a right turn along the Number Six Village Public Road. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle which toppled several times before coming to a halt in a nearby trench. Rahaman and his, 19-year-old girlfriend, Parveena Brijemal were both pulled from the wreckage and taken to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Brijemal, however, was admitted in a stable condition. Rahaman’s mother, Waheed Rahaman recalled receiving the news and rushing to the accident scene and then to the hospital. According to the grieving mother, her son was bleeding from the head due to what appeared to be injuries. She said he asked her to accompany him to Church’s Chicken at Rosignol but she told him she was going to a wake and suggested that he take his girlfriend on the trip instead.

“And I keep calling them, they say that Church’s was closed so they went to Church’s in New Amsterdam. So, I call them back and say that’s how they’re waiting on the chicken. So, the average time, like when they finish there, I call them back and tell them to go and pick me up to come home.”

“I keep calling their phone, I call his phone, I call her phone. When I get no response, I make many, many calls to them. And then I get worried because when they go out and they don’t answer, I get very worried about them,” she revealed. The aggrieved mother related that the now dead mechanic was her only son.  She remembers him as a quiet individual who was not a troublemaker. “He is a very good son. I had a good son. My son is my life.”

Family members said arrangements were being made for the couple’s wedding which would have been in December or January.
