Youth footballers impress Finland-based coach

players set to be selected for overseas stints

Kristian Heames, coach of the Finland based FF Jaro club was duly impressed on Saturday by the National Under-17 Footballers, which has corresponded in some of the players being selected for a possible stint at the club.

The sessions which were held at the No.5 Ground, West Coast Berbice saw Heames giving the players various drills to test both their awareness and skill levels.

Ryan Hackett (centre) was one of the numerous players who were working overtime to during the various drills

Responding to questions about a player(s) possible selection, he stated, ” Yes definitely, it is just working out the mechanics of how it can be done, in terms of how you can bring the players into the county because Finland is a great opportunity for that since the regulations allow for players outside of the European union, Guyana being one, to come more easily”.

He added, “They are really receptive, they have a good attitude, which is the number one thing that I would look for; they have that professional mentality”.

In terms of selecting a possible candidate or two to attend a try-out for foreign clubs, Heames explained that he will now observe how they display what they have learned.

” I think what I have done so far has given me a good idea, I have not worked with the defenders , Walter [Moore] did, so he would have to give me feedback to see how receptive they were which is the main thing; we still have a few sessions so having worked with them , I can now take a step back and observe from a distance if what I thought made an impression”

Heames, who is the coach of former Guyana Jaguars defender Walter Moore, is part of a technical programme of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), which actively seeks to involve past and present national players as part of the technical development programme.

The UEFA A licence coach sought to teach the players a European style of play, where some players adapted quickly.

“I was trying get them to think differently , one like a European team would, I understand their style of play and climate is different but I wanted to do something that I would do with the professional club in Finland , to get them to think in that way and adopt some of the things in that style”.

The 38 year-old furthered elaborated “it is a lot about counter attacking, changing quickly and it took them a little bit of time to get used to it because when you change anyone’s style it takes a while to get out of the normal habits but I was impressed with some players who really caught on straight away”.

Likewise, Moore was elated that his young countrymen rose to the occasion, stating, “I’m so happy the guys delivered and the coach is happy, it is just now for us to discuss and see them in a final game this [Saturday] afternoon and we will make a decision from there”.

Commenting on working with the fellow defenders, he posited that “It has been great; in the beginning the defenders struggled as to why they did certain things with their body but after explaining to them some grasped it right away, they are skill full players, it is just for them to keep the focus”.
