Retired cop accused of abducting businessman released on bail

A 55-year-old retired Policeman who allegedly abducted a Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) businessman appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.
Kenneth Bahadur of Melanie, ECD, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on September 12, at Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown, he abducted Jagdish Mangal with intent to secretly confine him. Bail was granted to him in the sum of $200,000 by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly. Bahadur was represented by Attorney-at-Law Patrice Henry.

The Police Prosecutor objected to Bahadur being released on bail, citing the fact that his alleged accomplices were still on the run and the likelihood that he might tamper with witnesses. The prosecution’s objections were, however, overruled by the Magistrate. The matter was adjourned until October 7, 2022.
Police Headquarters reported that the 35-year-old businessman of Belmont, Mahaica was abducted on Monday around 19:00h from a popular bar at Station Street, Kitty.
He was also relieved of over $3.6 million worth of gold and diamond jewellery, by two men and the retired cop. Based on reports, Mangal and the men are known to each other and they have an ongoing dispute over money. Mangal told detectives that he was at the bar imbibing when the two men, along with the retired cop, arrived in a vehicle.
The men then exited the car, approached Mangal, and began punching him about his body while telling him that they wanted their money. The retired Policeman was allegedly heard telling the men to take the victim away. Mangal was then forced into the back seat of the suspects’ vehicle.
The victim further claimed that while in the vicinity of Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, one of the suspects pointed a gun at him and relieved him of a gold and diamond band valued at $1.5 million, a black diamond with a gold ring valued at $1.2 million, and one gold chain valued at $900,000.
Mangal also told cops that he was taken to the home of one of the suspects in Kitty where he was forced at gunpoint to sign a note stating that he owed $900,000 to the suspects.
The businessman was then taken to a hotel on Church Street, Georgetown, where he was ordered out of the vehicle by the two men.
The matter was later reported to the Brickdam Police Station. As such, detectives who visited the bar at Station Street, Kitty, questioned several persons, including the proprietor about the incident, and the retired Policeman was arrested. The other two suspects remain at large.
As part of their investigations, Police Detectives reviewed footage from nearby Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
