Campbelle “stuck to the basics” in match-winning World Cup knock

Guyana’s Women Cricket Captain Shemaine Campbelle produced a magnificent knock of 90* to lead West Indies Women to a famous win against New Zealand in the ongoing 2026 International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup.
Campbelle, who grew up in Liverpool Village in Corentyne, Berbice, said she played cricket on merit and that helped her to her maiden T20 half-century, which was supremely brilliant.
“I just want to go there and back myself. I talk to myself a lot, so I said I’m gonna do this for my team. And, tonight I came through and I did it.
“I mean, all I did is to just back my skills. I know I’m a kind of a calibre of player that I can go out and change the situation at times. But tonight I just go out and do that. And I talk to myself and tell myself that if I bat straight for the first 20 minutes, definitely that will be good for my team,” Campbelle explained.

West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews also played her part scoring a supportive 48 in the chase of 163. According to Campbelle, Matthews is a special cricketer and backed her to stick to her strengths.
“Oh, you know, she’s a special kind of person. She always keep talking to me and when you come back, just keep believing in yourself and keep playing to your strength. And I think that’s what worked for me.
“You know, I’m a believer and I know that God got me, and I always pray to him. So, definitely, He got me and I love Lord Jesus so much. So, I want to thank him for all the work that you have been doing for me and also my team,” Campbelle expressed.
This victory came not only against a New Zealand team, but the defending champions of the T20 World Cup. For West Indies, they were missing some key players in Chinelle Henry and Stafanie Taylor.
“On what the victory means for a team missing key players through injury – I mean, it’s a big thing for us. I mean, Stafanie and Chinelle … not there, but you know, we still get players that get put up there at that time. So, I think that’s a plus for us,” Campbelle added.
West Indies will return to action against Scotland on Thursday, June 18 at Leeds, in England.
