Police are investigating a serious accident which occurred on Saturday, wherein an allegedly drunken driver lost control of a motorcar and it collided with a pedestrian on the pavement at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Based on information received, the incident occurred at about 22:30h, when motorcar PSS 3512, driven by a 47-year-old man, was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the road reportedly at a fast rate, and became uncontrollable.
As a result, the vehicle veered off on the left side of the road and collided with another vehicle, which was stationary on the parapet, before it hit the pedestrian who was sitting on the said parapet, toppled and then came to a halt.
The 40-year-old pedestrian was picked up in a conscious condition by paramedics, and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains a patient.
Both vehicles were damaged. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and he is in custody assisting with the investigation.
Meanwhile, on Christmas Day, a 45-year-old pedestrian was injured after a Police constable lost control of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) he was driving and it crashed into him. Police Headquarters in a statement said the accident involving Police Constable Lyle and 45-year-old Shawn Peters occurred on the Den Amstel Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
Enquiries revealed that ATV bearing registration number CJ 3400, and owned by the Guyana Police Force, was proceeding at a fast rate of speed. The Police constable alleged that while he was proceeding, the ATV developed a mechanical problem, causing him to lose control. As a result, he collided with the Back Street, Den Amstel resident.
