A mother and her two children are now homeless after fire of unknown origin completely razed their home at Lot 6 Thorne’s Drive, D’Urban Backlands, Georgetown.

The distraught home owner, Mia Ritchie, who resided near President David Granger’s former official residence, said she was at work when she was contacted by her neighbours around 12:45h informing her of the fire.
Ritchie, who is employed as an announcer at the National Communications Network (NCN), was unable to estimate her losses as she explained that she was still coming to grips with what happened.
Nothing was saved from the building but her daughter’s violin, the woman told <<<Guyana Times>>> as she was almost in tears.
Ritchie and her two children, aged 11 and nine, have been living at that location for the past seven years.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the Head of State’s home. The team of men were unable to say what may have triggered the fire, but they noted that an investigation was launched.
The woman said she did not have any issues with her neighbours and as such, ruled out arson.
Only on Sunday, an abandoned house in Kitty, Georgetown, which was previously occupied by at least six homeless persons, was completely destroyed around 15:30h. It is believed that one of the male occupants of the house left a fire unattended.
In fact, a neighbour told this publication that the fire started when one of the dwellers who was cooking left the home and went on the road to make a purchase. She explained that when he returned and saw the building on fire, he ran away.
