Flooding forces closure of Coomacka Primary; classes moved to multipurpose hall – Education Dept

Flooding caused by the overtopping of the Demerara River has forced the temporary closure of Coomacka Primary School in Region 10, with classes and other school activities set to be relocated to the Coomacka Multipurpose Hall.
According to the Department of Education, Region 10, an emergency supervisory visit was conducted on Friday, June 12, 2026, to assess the impact of the flooding on the school and determine whether the compound remained suitable for occupancy.

Regional Education Officer La Shanna Anderson and Education Officer II Selwyn Griffith during the assessment

The assessment team, led by Regional Education Officer La Shanna Anderson and Education Officer II Selwyn Griffith, found that several sections of the school compound were under more than two feet of water. The floodwaters were also reported to be contaminated, raising health and safety concerns for both learners and staff.
Officials noted that access to key areas of the school, including the kitchen, required persons to move through water above knee height. Based on these conditions, the team determined that the school was unsafe for the continuation of classes.
As part of contingency measures, learners and staff will be accommodated at the Coomacka Multipurpose Hall. Teachers are expected to continue reporting for duty daily to facilitate the administration of annual examinations beginning on June 15, the National Grade Five Assessment (NGFA), and other end-of-term activities.
The Department of Education also acknowledged the support of Community Enhancement Programme (CEP) workers and Pathway workers, who have volunteered to assist with the relocation of furniture and essential resources to the multipurpose hall on Saturday.
The department said it remains committed to protecting the welfare of learners and staff while ensuring that educational activities continue despite the challenges posed by the flooding.
