Guyana close out Caribbean Championship with bronze

After an amazing week at the 60th Caribbean Table Tennis Federation (CTTF) Senior Championships in Jamaica, the Guyanese team ended their 2018 run on a high note, copping three bronze medals.
National men’s champion Christopher Franklin, Trenace Lowe and Chelsea Edghill were the only Guyanese who made it into the semi-finals of the senior singles round and although they did not make it into the final, the trio played their matches valiantly to clinch the bronze.
In the semis, Lowe suffered a loss to the dominant Dominican Republic’s Yasiris Ortiz 3-4. Ortiz eventually went on to take the gold medal in the women’s singles. The first set was Ortiz’s 11-4, but the second went to the Guyanese 14-12. The match became intense when Ortiz took two sets 11-5, 11-4, but Lowe struck back with two of her own, 11-8, 11-5. Lowe almost tasted victory, but narrowly missed the last set, losing 11-13 to the eventual winner.
Edghill was pitted against another strong Dominican Republic player and suffered the same fate as her countrywoman losing 9-11, 3-11, 6-11, 2-11. Edghill’s bronze will add to her well-deserved Under-21 gold medal.
Over in the male singles, another Dominican Republic athlete was the one to stop Guyana in their tracks as Samuel Galvez edged past Franklin 9-11, 10-12, 9-11, 5-11. Despite the loss, Franklin played brilliantly to push his opponent to four sets.
At the senior Caribbean Championships, Guyana won two silver medals in the male and female teams categories, two bronzes in the women’s doubles, three bronzes in the men’s and women’s singles and the highlight of the tournament for the locals was the gold medals from Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill in the male and female Under-21 category.
