La Grange house destroyed due to overheated electric iron

Six persons are now rendered homeless after a fire reportedly caused by an overheated electric iron destroyed a house at Lot 343 Recht-Door-Zee, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Monday.
According to the Fire Service, upon receiving the call, two water tenders were dispatched to the area. The two-storey wooden and concrete building is owned and occupied by 62-year-old Carolyn Jervis and her five family members.

The fire, believed to have started due to an electric iron left plugged in for an extended period, consumed the top flat of the building resulting in destruction.
La Grange firefighters, however, managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby houses.
The GFS has once again pleaded with citizens to regularly inspect cords for damage, avoid overloading outlets, install and test smoke detectors, keep a fire extinguisher and understand its usage, use surge protectors for electronics, and maintain distance between flammable materials and appliances.
“… engage professionals for electrical work, promptly replace damaged wiring, ensure appropriate light bulb wattage, unplug appliances when not in use, and opt for GNBS-approved electrical products”, the release stated.
