Leung leads Guyana with 6-place finish in Caribbean junior time trial

Alexander Leung led Guyana’s challenge with a sixth-place finish in the junior men’s Individual Time Trial at the 2026 Caribbean Junior Road Cycling Championship in Belize on Saturday.
Leung completed the event along Boom Hattieville Road in 28 minutes, 50.68 seconds, recording an average speed of 41.602 kilometres per hour (km/h).
His Guyanese teammate, Alex Newton, followed closely in seventh place with a time of 29:03.17 and an average speed of 41.304km/h. Only 12.49 seconds separated the national riders in the 12-man field.
Ryan Thompson of the Cayman Islands captured the gold medal after producing the fastest time of 26:03.44. He averaged 46.052km/h during his winning ride.

Bermuda’s Jacob Wright claimed silver in 26:44.95, while Barbados’ Jonah Kelly secured bronze after stopping the clock at 27:05.27.
Leung finished 2:47.24 behind the champion and was 31.42 seconds outside the top five. Newton ended 2:59.73 behind Thompson.
The Guyanese pair will return to action in the championship’s road race on Sunday. That event is scheduled to begin at 08:00h along the Philip Goldson Highway in the vicinity of the Mirab department store.
The three-day championship began on Friday with the official team presentation at the Belize Biltmore Plaza. It is being staged by the Cycling Federation of Belize under the regional and international cycling bodies.
