Man jailed, fined $612,000 after admitting to ganja trafficking

Jailed: Alvin Heralall

Twenty-three-year-old Alvin Heralall was on Friday sentenced to one year imprisonment and fined $612,000 after pleading guilty to possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Heralall appeared before Magistrate Tamika Clarke at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court in relation to the possession of 680 grams (g) of cannabis. The matter stemmed from an operation conducted by officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Wednesday at Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway. According to CANU, officers were conducting an operation at a residence in the area when they observed several persons sitting under a shop adjacent to the property. Officers subsequently requested to conduct searches.
A man and woman present at the location reportedly told officers that they lived in the nearby residence. During a search of the property, officers discovered a quantity of cannabis concealed inside a small haversack in a bedroom occupied by the couple. Heralall, a labourer, and a 21-year-old woman were arrested and taken to CANU Headquarters along with the suspected narcotics. The substance later tested positive for cannabis and weighed approximately 680g.
CANU had stated that it continues intelligence-led operations targeting micro-level drug trafficking across communities.
The agency said small-scale narcotics trafficking contributes to criminal activity and community harm, adding that it remains committed to strengthening enforcement and disrupting local drug distribution networks.
