12th YBG National Youth Basketball Festival….

Marian Academy dominated three of the four matches played at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue last Friday, while St. Rose’s High School cashed in on a victory when action in the 12th staging of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) National Youth Basketball Festival commenced.
In the Girls’ Development category, Marian Academy brushed aside President’s College 15-9. Jada Mohan was on the forefront, scoring eight points with eight rebounds and two steals, while Jahrier Young supported well with seven points and five rebounds.
Led by Analis Barclay with six points and six steals, President’s College fought valiantly, Barclay getting support from Lydia Roberts with three points and three rebounds.
In the Boys’ Under-14 division, Marian Academy once again got the better of a President’s College side with a 26-17 win. Jether Harris led from the front with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three steals, while Duard Lewis was equally effective with six points and six rebounds.
President’s College were kept in the match up to the latter stages, with Gabriel Lin scoring five points and 10 rebounds, while Joshua Butts totalled seven points on the night.
Also in the Boys’ Under-14 category, The Bishops’ High School secured a walkover against Queen’s College.
Meanwhile, in the Under-19 Boys’ division, St. Rose’s High schooled The Bishops’ High School, winning their match by a seven-point margin. Anthony Yansen with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Mark July’s five points, six rebounds, and Kwesi Baker’s five points were enough to see St. Roses reach 34 points; while Royden Glasgow (eight points), Stephon Greaves (seven points) and Shamal Beaton (12 points) could only muster 27 points in a losing effort.
Also, Marian Academy disposed of President’s College in the third encounter of these two schools clashing for the night (in three divisions). Timothy Thompson, scoring 19 points and 17 rebounds, led the Carifesta Avenue- based team to a 42-point game. He was supported by Jether Harris and Joshua Daniels with seven points each, to see their team reach 42 points at the final buzzer.
President’s College could only manage 26 points, 14 of which were scored by Akeem Crandon, who also scored eight rebounds and four blocks. Anton Fileen secured 11 points.
